About Shelby Comprehensive Treatment Center in Shelby, NC
Shelby Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) offers first-class care for adults age 18 and older who have developed addictions to opioids, including fentanyl, heroin, and prescription painkillers. Located in Shelby, North Carolina, our outpatient rehab facility provides medication-assisted treatment, which is also known as MAT. Our clinic serves adults throughout Cleveland County, North Carolina, and other nearby communities.
Medication-assisted treatment is a specialized form of care that has a strong base of research supporting it. Methadone clinics and other opioid addiction treatment centers have offered this intervention for many years, helping countless people make progress on their journeys to lasting recovery.
One of the reasons medication-assisted treatment can be so effective in helping adults achieve success in recovery is because it addresses the needs of the whole person. This includes a person’s physical, emotional, and social recovery needs. Medication-assisted treatment combines the use of effective medications like methadone with counseling to promote well-rounded and lasting success.
If you are struggling with an opioid addiction, receiving MAT services at a methadone clinic like Shelby CTC can help you navigate the physical challenges of opioid addiction recovery. Additionally, and just as importantly, it can help you build a foundation of healthy behaviors, coping strategies, and social support that can allow you to persevere through setbacks and remain committed to living a healthier life.
At Shelby CTC methadone clinic, we provide medication-assisted treatment on an outpatient basis. This format can allow you to begin your recovery journey while continuing to live at home and attend to your regular commitments and goals. In our outpatient treatment program, we strive to exceed the services of many traditional methadone clinics by providing comprehensive care options for our patients.
At Shelby CTC, we offer several MAT medications for patients. These include methadone, Suboxone®, buprenorphine, and Vivitrol. The medication a patient receives depends on their individual needs, including their medical and substance use histories. Our outpatient treatment program also includes individual and group therapy sessions. Substance abuse group therapy can be hugely beneficial during medication-assisted treatment, as the sense of community it offers can support growth and positive change.
Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction
Starting your opioid addiction treatment journey can be intimidating and scary. And getting through the withdrawal process without returning to opioid use can seem like an insurmountable challenge. Medication-assisted treatment offers a highly supportive approach to care that can help you end opioid use and truly begin your recovery.
The medications offered in our outpatient MAT program can help ease the impacts of opioid withdrawal, making it easier for patients to stop using opioids. Methadone, buprenorphine, and Suboxone®, which we offer at Shelby CTC, help relieve the physical distress and discomfort that can occur during the withdrawal process. These medications also help alleviate opioid cravings. Our CTC also offers naltrexone in the form of Vivitrol, which blocks the effects of opioid drugs and suppresses opioid cravings.
The physical benefits of medication-assisted treatment are vitally important. However, they are just one component of the recovery toolkit MAT programs offer adults who are working toward recovery from opioid addictions. Counseling is also a key part of the outpatient treatment process and can allow people to explore how their struggles with addiction may have impacted them.
By participating in medication-assisted treatment, people can experience positive outcomes in many different areas of their lives. Participating in MAT can also increase the chances of someone remaining in opioid addiction treatment and achieving their recovery goals. Other potential benefits of MAT include:
- Reduced use of prescription painkillers and illicit opioids
- Better social functioning
- Increased ability to gain and keep employment
- Lowered risk for contracting HIV or hepatitis C
- Improved birth outcomes for babies who are born to women who have opioid use disorder

Our Treatment Therapies
A key feature of the outpatient treatment program at Shelby CTC is the individualized care we provide. This means that each person remains in our program for the length of time that makes the most sense for them while receiving the services and therapies that can best promote their success.
In our outpatient program, counseling is an important part of the recovery process. We offer on-site individual and group therapy sessions, and telehealth counseling services are also available.
Substance abuse counselors conduct all individual sessions at Shelby CTC. The frequency of these sessions typically depends on the length of time someone has been receiving treatment. These sessions are one-on-one conversations that can allow you to receive support, share difficult feelings, and make plans for a brighter future.
Group therapy sessions at our outpatient treatment center also take place under the guidance of trained substance abuse counselors. We primarily offer psychoeducational groups to support our patients’ recovery journeys. These groups are designed to educate participants about addiction recovery and teach recovery skills. Topics can include relapse prevention, coping skills, life skills, addiction, and MAT education.
Group therapy may also be a valuable opportunity to connect with others who are receiving substance abuse treatment at our clinic. Many people find that the shared learning experiences that can occur in groups provide helpful motivation as they navigate treatment.
In addition to individual and group therapies, our methadone clinic at Shelby CTC also incorporates family involvement into its programming. We offer regular family education sessions and family events, depending on a patient’s preferences.
Patients at Shelby CTC also work closely with our staff to plan for their eventual discharge from our program. Aftercare plans are updated throughout treatment to reflect patients’ progress. These plans most often include recommendations for further counseling as well as local support groups.
