About Virginia Beach Comprehensive Treatment Center in Virginia

Virginia Beach Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) provides high-quality care for adults age 18 and older who are struggling with opioid addictions. Our center, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help individuals achieve recovery from addictions to opioids, including heroin and prescription painkillers. MAT is an evidence-based method of opioid addiction treatment that combines the use of prescription medications with counseling.

At Virginia Beach CTC, we take the time to understand each patient’s unique needs and develop a personalized treatment plan for them. This plan includes a prescription for medication and a schedule for individual and group therapy sessions. We want every patient to feel heard and understood as they take this important step on their recovery journey. Our dedicated professionals work together with our patients to help them find their path to a healthier life.

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction

Opioid addiction is a complex condition that can profoundly affect individuals, their loved ones, and the community. Opioids are a class of drugs that are known for their pain-relieving effects. They also stimulate the brain’s reward system and create a euphoric high. Over time, the use of opioids may lead someone to develop a physical dependence. When a person stops using opioids, withdrawal symptoms such as chills, muscle aches, nausea, and rapid heart rate can occur. Experiencing these distressing symptoms often causes people to go back to using the drug in an attempt to alleviate discomfort, making it more difficult to achieve recovery and increasing the risk for overdose, long-term health complications, and emotional distress.

MAT is a treatment method that has proved to help people break the cycle of opioid addiction. The medications prescribed as part of MAT vary based on location but may include methadone, buprenorphine, and Suboxone®. The use of these FDA-approved medications can relieve patients’ withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Our team continually monitors the effects of the medications to ensure that each patient is as comfortable as possible, adjusting the dosage as needed.

Research shows that medication-assisted treatment increases treatment retention and significantly reduces the risk for relapse. While the use of prescription medications helps ease physical symptoms, counseling plays a critical role in helping patients process their emotions, identify harmful behaviors, and learn healthier coping skills. Peer support is also essential for opioid addiction recovery, as it fosters a sense of connection and mutual understanding among those who are facing similar struggles.

By participating in a MAT program, patients can:

  • Regain stability
  • Secure and sustain employment
  • Improve relationships
  • Build self-esteem
  • Achieve lasting recovery

The Role of Counseling in Recovery

At Virginia Beach CTC, we offer individual and group counseling sessions where patients can explore the root causes of addiction and work toward making meaningful life changes.

In individual therapy, patients meet privately with a counselor to receive mental health support and guidance. This safe, confidential space allows them to discuss their thoughts and emotions, understand the effects of trauma, and set goals for the future. Our counselors encourage patients to speak openly and honestly, helping them identify obstacles that may be preventing them from reaching their full potential. Patients can learn healthy coping mechanisms, develop emotion regulation skills, and strengthen their relationships with themselves and others. They can also learn how to manage stress in healthy ways, improve communication and conflict resolution, set and maintain boundaries, practice self-compassion, and recognize early warning signs of relapse. By developing these skills, they can build resilience and work toward lasting recovery.

Group therapy provides a space for patients to connect with others and share their experiences. These sessions can offer a supportive environment where patients encourage and inspire one another throughout treatment. Led by experienced counselors, group therapy sessions focus on open discussions about the impact of addiction, personal struggles, and the recovery process. By sharing their stories and listening to others, patients can find reassurance in knowing that they are not alone.

In group therapy, individuals can also cultivate key life skills, including the self-awareness to recognize their strengths and areas for growth, adaptability to navigate change without relying on harmful behaviors, resilience to overcome setbacks, and emotion regulation to maintain overall well-being. Additionally, counselors can teach patients how to build strong relationships while respecting personal boundaries.

By receiving both individual and group counseling services, patients at Virginia Beach CTC can build their confidence, develop crucial life skills, and establish a strong support network that fosters lasting recovery.

The Benefits of an Outpatient MAT Program

An outpatient MAT program is designed to offer flexible scheduling, allowing individuals to balance treatment with their job, school, and family responsibilities. Patients in our MAT program can attend individual and group therapy sessions that fit into their schedule. Counselors provide guidance, encouragement, and tailored support that can help patients navigate their recovery journeys with confidence. This integrated method of opioid addiction treatment can address both the patient’s emotional and physical well-being, promoting lasting healing.

Beyond professional guidance, patients can benefit from the connections they form in group therapy, which may reduce feelings of isolation. Through therapy, individuals can gain the skills and confidence they need to develop healthier habits, empowering them to take control of their lives.

The benefits of MAT extend beyond individual recovery, positively impacting the broader community. By helping people manage the symptoms of opioid use disorder effectively, MAT programs can reduce drug-related offenses, leading to decreased criminal activity and alleviating the strain on law enforcement and judicial systems. Additionally, MAT can lower healthcare costs by reducing emergency room visits and hospitalizations associated with untreated addiction or overdose, easing the financial burden on hospitals and taxpayers.

With fewer opioid-related crimes and hospitalizations, communities are able to reallocate their resources toward essential public services, which can create a safer and more stable environment. By supporting MAT, communities invest in long-term recovery, public safety, and building a foundation for lasting positive change.
